Biography

Steven Thomas tries cases in state and federal courts throughout the United States. As the lead trial lawyer of the TAFS team, Mr. Thomas has obtained the only two jury verdicts awarding punitive damages against auditing firms in substantial cases and the only jury verdict to find an accounting firm negligent in the Madoff matters. Mr. Thomas and TAFS have tried three multi-billion dollar jury trials in Seattle, Miami and New York, obtaining a jury verdict and two settlements before TAFS’ plaintiff clients rested their case. Mr. Thomas has been the subject of profiles in the American Lawyer and the Financial Times, and is known for his cross-examinations and closing statements.

Prior to forming TAFS, Steven Thomas was a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell for six years where he developed a contingency-fee plaintiffs practice. Mr. Thomas’ understanding of the financial markets and complex financial instruments provides a unique advantage to TAFS’ clients.

Mr. Thomas attended Duke Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Duke Law Journal and graduated Order of the Coif. He clerked for The Honorable Ralph K. Winter, formerly Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
